CHALLALUYA'S STORY

How it started

 

Being diagnosed with Celiac as a student at the university had its challenges, especially back in 2002 when the market for gluten-free products was fairly small.  The world has changed since then and there are more and more varieties of gluten-free food out there. However, for those of us in Israel, there is still one thing missing: Gluten-Free oat challah. 

 

For ten years, I always felt a little out of place at the Shabbat table: not being able to do netilat yadaim, not being able to say Birkat HaMazon, and always having to explain why.  After making aliyah, I discovered the availability of gluten-free oat flour and thought I would give challah baking a try. 

 

Much to my surprise, the challah turned out amazingly.  I began bringing the challah to meals for Shabbat and it was gone within minutes - not only by those with Celiac, gluten intolerance, or a gluten-sensitivity, but also by everyone else at the table.  And thus, Challaluya was born. 

 

Ever since, I have been baking challah weekly, putting smiles on the faces of those in need of Gluten-Free kosher challah around Jerusalem (and even in Modi'in, Efrat, and Netanya).

הסיפור של חללויה…..

איך הכול התחיל?

להיות סטודנטית מאובחנת עם צליאק זה אתגר בפני עצמו במיוחד אם מדובר בשנת 2002 כשבקושי אפשר למצוא מוצרים ללא גלוטן על המדף. העולם השתנה מאז ויש בשוק יותר ויותר מבחר של מוצרים ללא גלוטן. עם זאת, לאלו מאתנו שחיים בישראל, עדיין חסר דבר אחד בלבד: חלה משיבולת שועל, ללא גלוטן.

במשך 10 שנים תמיד הרגשתי מוזר בשולחן השבת: לא יכולתי ליטול ידיים או להגיד ברכת המזון ותמיד הייתי צריכה להסביר מדוע. אחרי שעליתי לארץ גיליתי את קמח שיבולת השועל, ללא גלוטן, וחשבתי לנסות את מזלי באפייה.

להפתעתי, החלה יצאה מדהים‼! התחלתי להביא איתי את החלה לארוחות שבת והיא חוסלה – לא רק ע"י הצליאקים, או אלה עם אי סבילות לגלוטן או רגישי- גלוטן למיניהם. בתוך דקות ספורות לא נשאר פרור. וכך נולדה חללויה.

מאז אני אופה חלה מדי שבוע ומשמחת את כל אלה שנזקקים לחלה כשרה ללא גלוטן באזור ירושלים (וגם במודיעין, אפרת ונתניה…).
